U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel has met with the Thai Prime Minister to strengthen relations between both nations.
Mr. Russel said although the U.S. government has a better understanding of the current situation in Thailand, but the American public and media remain unclear about certain issues including human rights, freedom of expression and human trafficking.
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha reiterated to the Assistant Secretary of State that he is determined to restore balance between democracy and national security and individual rights and freedoms. He also stressed that he did not want Thailand to experience another political quagmire.
The premier added that Thailand will have a transparent government where everyone has a say under the new constitution. Members of the media and Thai public will be able to express their views publicly as long as they don’t lead to social divide.
As for human trafficking prevention efforts, General Prayut said the government has always been taking a serious action against human traffickers. The Prime Minister said he hoped America will also see the commitment the Thai government has made on national reform.
