State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi has pledged to improve the quality of life of Myanmese workers overseas during her visit to Thailand.

Mrs. Suu Kyi was greeted by thousands of Myanmese workers at Talay Thai Market in Samut Sakhon province, where she held a Q & A session. In her speech, the Nobel laureate said the people of Myanmar were the first group she intended to meet, as they are the representatives of Thailand’s neighbor.

Mrs. Suu Kyi, who also serves as Myanmar’s Foreign Minister, stressed the importance of solidarity and abiding by the host country’s laws among Myanmese people working in Thailand. As to whether Myanmese workers should have health insurance cards, she argued that health insurance is necessary to guaranteeing their rights to a wide range of medical services.

Myanmar’s State Counsellor also affirmed that she would push for the issuance of Certificates of Identity within the month. The certificates would be used as temporary passports for Myanmese workers, as part of efforts to improve the quality of life of those working abroad.
