เมื่อวันที่ 26 ตุลาคม 2559 นางสาวพรพิมล สุคันธวณิช รองกงสุลใหญ่ ณ เมืองเจนไน ได้เข้าร่วมเป็นประธานในพิธีเปิดงานสัมมนาทางวิชาการด้านพระพุทธศาสนาในหัวข้อ “Buddhism in South India: History, Heritage and Philosophy" ที่ Department of Philosophy, University of Madras

การจัดการสัมมนาทางวิชาการดังกล่าว สถานกงสุลใหญ่ ณ เมืองเจนไนได้ร่วมกับ Department of Philosophy of the University of Madras และ Tamil Nadu Bouddha Sangam จัดขึ้นเป็นเวลา 2 วันระหว่างวันที่ 26-27 ตุลาคม 2559 โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อรวบรวมและเผยแพร่บทความทางวิชาการเกี่ยวกับพระพุทธศาสนาในอินเดียตอนใต้  งานสัมมนาในวันแรกมีกำหนดพิธีเปิดงาน ซึ่งมีนักวิชาการเข้าร่วมหลายท่าน ซึ่งรวมถึง (1) Prof. Dr. G. Mishra,  Head of the Department of Philosophy, University of Madras (2)  Dr. P. David Jawahar, Registrar of University of Madras (3) Prof. S. Karunanidhi, Head of Department of Psychology, University of Madras (4) Ven. Dr. Bhikku Bodhipala, Chairman of Tamil Nadu Bouddha Sangam และ (5) Dr. R. Nagaswamy, Renowned Archaeologist

รองกงสุลใหญ่ฯ ซึ่งได้รับเชิญให้เป็นแขกกิติมศักดิ์ ได้กล่าวสุนทรพจน์เกี่ยวกับความเชื่อมโยงระหว่างพุทธศาสนาในอินเดียใต้กับประเทศไทยและเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ พร้อมย้ำถึงความร่วมมือที่จะดำเนินการส่งเสริมพระพุทธศาสนาในอินเดียใต้ของสถานกงสุลใหญ่ฯ อย่างต่อเนื่องต่อไป

นอกจากนี้ ระหว่างการสัมมนายังได้มีการยืนถวายอาลัยให้กับพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 9 และการเปิดตัวหนังสือเกี่ยวกับพระพุทธศาสนาด้วย

On 26^th October 2016, Ms. Pornpimol Sugandhavanija, Deputy Consul-General, attended the National Seminar on “Buddhism in South India: History, Heritage and Philosophy ” at Department of Philosophy at the University of Madras.

The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Chennai collaborated with Department of Philosophy of the University of Madras and Tamil Nadu Bouddha Sangam to conduct the said National Seminar for two days during 26-27 October 2016.  The aim of the seminar is to collect and publicize academic works and in-depth research on Buddhism in South India in varรous aspects.  The first day progaram started with the inauguration ceremony whereby representatives and scholars in the field participated in. Those included Dr. G. Mishra, Professor and Head of the department of Philosophy in University of Madras, and Dr. P. David Jawahar, Registrar of University of Madras.

Ms. Pornpimol Sugandhavanija, Deputy Consul-General of Royal Thai Consulate-General, in Chennai was invited as the Chief Guest and delivered her speech to the audience about linkages between Buddhism from India and South Asia to Thailand and Southeast Asia and stressed the commitment of the Royal Thai Consulate in supporting Buddhism affairs in the region.  Other Guests invited to the seminar are Prof. S. Karunanidhi, Head of department of Psychology, University of Madras and Ven. Dr. Bhikku Bodhipala, Chairman of Tamil Nadu Bouddha Sangam delivered their speech. Dr. R. Nagaswamy, Renowned Archaeologist delivered the key-note address to the audience about evidences of the Buddhist artifacts and Buddhist culture in South-India in comparative with Thailand and Southeast Asia. Dr. R. Nagaswamy during his speech conveyed his deepest condolence to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand and all the gathering in the seminar maintained a minute silence for the rememberance of His Majesty King of Thailand.

The two books on Buddhism in South India were released by the dignitaries on the dias. The final vote of thanks were given by Mr. O. N. Krishnan of Tamil Nadu Bouddha Sangam.
