BANGKOK, 18 September 2016 (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is continuing its yearly event to encourage the city’s residents to leave their cars at home for a day to help ease traffic woes.

The Bangkok Car Free Day 2016, which is in its 16th year this year, got underway at 7.30 am today with the launch of bikers at Sanam Luang.

Participating bikers took a 9-kilometer route, which was designed around the city’s Rattanakosin Island — an historic area inside the Phra Nakorn District.

Concurrently, a number of interesting activities began at Sanam Luang on the theme of “Magic of a Car-Free Day around Rattanakosin Island” as visitors to the event were invited to use a free health check-up service, and purchase locally-made products from the Phra Nakorn community, enjoy performances by famous musicians as well as a walk-biking rally race.

Today the BMA also offered a free city-tour bus service along the bike tour route for the whole day so that fair-goers can get to know more about important landmarks in the area.

City Hall announced that it has been planning to introduce at least one car-free day each month around Rattanakosin Island and further develop the bike lane and launch new and small public transportation systems.
